Early morning nest activities
by nature rules
Mixed Media Photograph of the Month Contest Entry
The same two geese come in early Spring each year and make this nest directly across the pond from us. At least the male is always the same as he is banded on one ankle. On this early morning I was out checking for any hatching. I had to give a new little one some help. He was peeping loudly from the pond beneath an eroded bank. I reached him by using a long handled fishing net. I dropped him back on the nest. He was very wet and bedraggled. And the father goose was not happy with me being so close. I went back home to get my camera. The mother goose had taken the almost drowned baby under her wing with two that were several hours older and dried. One older dried one was enjoying the beautiful morning out from under her mom while the other one was climbing back under with the new and wet one. You can see his rear end and his legs pushing to get under his Mom. Mother goose hatched only 3 this year. Two eggs were left unhatched in the nest and were eventually crushed by other geese. Nature's reasoning is not always clear. But this family visits our bank several times each day and have all survived the predators in and around the pond.
