In October, most of our resident does come into heat,or estrus, and that's when the suitors come a-courting!However,the does aren't always receptive;often we can tell when a buck is approaching when the does start to scatter in every direction! The bucks hom in on the does in heat, and that's when the chase starts.Often the doe takes off running with the buck in hot pursuit;I watched one doe run past the house 3 times, leading her admirer on a merry chase.I've seen some of the does try to hide in the taller vegetation, but the buck stands guard nearby, waiting to pursue her once she takes off. This is what happened with this couple, the doe trying to become invisible in the dead goldenrods. He had his heart,or rather his hormones, set on her,so he was going to wait for her next move. They were on the bedroom side of the house, and I ran there with my camera when I saw them run past the back of the house. My original plan was to get some shots of the buck,as this is about the only time I see them, but when they both turned and looked toward the house,I decided to get some pictures of the pair. I made some minor adjustments to brightness and color and cropped the original horizontal into a vertical. Thank you for looking!
