TROPAEOLUM majus (aka-'Nasturtium') in the Evening

.....Night-Time Nasturtium

One of only a few annuals I grow in my gardens TROPAEOLUM majus (common name Nasturtium) is definitely the easiest to grow. Native to the jungles of Peru, even in my cold garden zone I do not need to pre-start them inside but simply sow the seeds in my gardens and within 7-10 days I have little sprouts. Besides being so easy to grow I find them one of the cheeriest of little flowers as well....I love their rich, saturated, jewel-toned colors.

The plant's Latin name, TROPAEOLUM, comes from the shield or circular shape of the plant's large pale green leaves while it's common name 'Nasturtium' means 'nose twister' in Latin..... referring to people's reaction upon tasting the flowers. These are the most commonly eaten of any flower (I frequently use them as a garnish on my own salads) and while they do have a very spicy, peppery flavor I think 'nose twister' is a bit of an exaggeration. Both foliage and flowers are edible and interestingly, Nasturtium seeds were used as a substitute for pepper during World War II.

The variety I grow most often is the 'Alaska Series' and includes blossoms in fiery shades of reds, oranges, and yellows. With the image seen here (taken after dark) I was most interested in showing the curious little claw on the three upper petals. Without a doubt, one of the most interesting.....and tasty little annuals in my gardens.
