The natural world, art in its broadest sense, travel, music and dance, story-telling
Tinlight (an alias) is a working journalist who considers her primary artistic talent to be writing. However, she now has a website at http://tinlight.smugmug.com where you may view a growing collection of her photography and art work.
After noticing that her on-location reporting was becoming more visual, she set out to learn more about visual art.
A lifelong interest in animals and nature initially steered tinlight towards wildlife photography, but her interests have since developed to encompass mixed media digital composition, digital painting and traditional drawing.
Tinlight enjoys reviewing the work of others and has been awed by the profusion of talent on display at FanArtReview.
I am writing this book because we are all going to die. - Jack Kerouac
Two wins this week in one set of contests was more than I had any right to expect, and I am so humbled by the FAR community's vote of confidence in me. In my animal photography, I have been striving to get up close and personal to allow the camera to tell stories about private lives, and I am so very grateful that this approach has apparently struck accord. Many, many thanks to all who voted for my photos this week!

My entry in the "All time worst" contest is so bad that no one wants to review it. So far, with zero starts to my credit, I must be in the lead!
July 4 at 5:24AM
Cephus : Just screwed you up and gave you a review. Tried for a zero but the system will not allow it so you got a 1.
July 4 at 4:56PM
tinlight : Well, what a surprise: equal numbers of 1-star and totally unexpected 5-star reviews. I do love it when people disagree about my work!
July 6 at 1:23AM
tinlight : Hahaha! Tied for first place as "All time worst". Thanks to all who voted me into the hall of shame (I think). Let it never be said that I don't have a good eye for a bad photo!

I finally did it: drew something entirely from imagination on a blank sheet of paper and had it come out better than an average two-year-old's effort. That may not sound like much to those of you lucky enough to be natural born artists, but to me, it's huge!
June 16 at 3:39AM
Doris1022 : did you post it? can't wait to see it.
June 16 at 9:30PM
tinlight : Yes, I did. It's in the Outside the Comfort Zone contest.

kimartist : That is so awesome! Congratulations! :) Btw, there are drawing exercises (like contour drawing) that can help you "break out" with your art skills. I really do think you have it in you to SHINE! ;)

A badge of honor for an artist: received my first one-star review!
Some people just don't get that this is supposed to be an ART community, not a commercial photography site, and therefore we are presumably supposed to experiment a bit and play with what constitutes art.
Someone didn't appreciate my neglected little rose bush struggling to survive and reproduce with the help of a life-giving tatty green drainpipe. If you're wondering what was so objectionable, you can view it here: http://www.fanartreview.com/displaystory.jsp?id=345034

MGTF Blue : Whilst I will agree that a 1* rating is a bit extreme, I do find it to be a VERY poor photograph and I would only give it 3.5*'s.
I fail to see what is "artistic" about a poorly taken image (flash lighting and composition) of a not very interesting subject.
December 31 at 12:11PM
Cephus : One also has to remember that most things expermental do not work. I also would not give it a "1" but not much higher. Art or Commercial, it is still not a good image. Labeling something as art does not make it better.
December 31 at 1:16PM
Skyangel02 : I agree with the above two comments. Just because something is labelled as art or experimental does not mean everyone must appreciate it or rate it highly. Some things which look great to some people can still look terrible to others. I sometimes post my own work which I would not rate above three myself and end up getting fives and sixes for it. Go figure! It just proves that one mans trash is anothers treasure. Don't let it upset you. Just accept that some like it and some will not. It is always about personal taste.

tinlight : I was actually more amused than upset, and I know experimental doesn't always work, or there wouldn't be any point in experimenting!

kimartist : @ Tinlight: I see you received responses from: All The Usual Suspects, LOL. Aka: The UK Low Score Squad. Well, now I'm curious and must go see this scraggly little rose for myself... :)

tinlight : I think I'll have to resolve all this nonsense by turning it into a mixed-media invention!
