kimartist: An artist, a lawyer, and a computer scientist are discussing the merits of a mistress. The artist tells of the passion, the thrill which comes with the risk of being discovered. The lawyer warns of the difficulties. It can lead to guilt, divorce, bankruptcy. Not worth it. Too many problems. The computer scientist says "It's the best thing that's ever happened to me. My wife thinks I'm with my mistress. My mistress thinks I'm home with my wife, and I can spend all night on the computer!"
    May 19 at 4:08PM
Doris1022: oh, that is funny, I am the computer nerd. at least Wayne knows I am in the house on the computer and not with someone else. lol
    May 19 at 8:17PM
kimartist: Who needs a mistress (or mister-ess, lol) when you have a 'puter? I ask you.

Doris1022: Another corny joke:
What kind of tool is the favorite of a Raven?

Answer: Crow-bar, bada bing.

Doris1022: My two cents/dollars worth is this...when you review. Use the stars as a guide. I have heard some thoughts about it is not fair to a better photographer/artist to give you a high score.

What I say to this is there are different level artist on this sight and it has to be taken into consideration.

I am not a photographer for money or craft. Just basically fun and neccesity.

I want to improve my art as I go along and I have had a lot of help here from many people.

I have learned a lot. Thanks everyone.

Back to the ratings...judge people by there own purposes not by what you expect or see other artist doing. Just because you don't like a work doesn't mean it is necesarily bad.
I would be nice to see those who can speak to the technical side of the works in a constructive way do so.

My understanding of the stars is that if you are giving less than 5 stars, then the work needs improvement technically. the lower the score the more work it needs. In art/photography there is a technical side and a aesthetic side. which means the visually pleasing part.

for example a photo could be blurry, but be creative, different, excellent color combinations etc. just perfect in all aspects except a little blurry. so would you count it as 1-5??
Am I making any sense?
May 16 at 11:49PM
RavnAdairDesigns: For me, it seems that if a piece is excellent with one weak element and one extraordinary element, that piece should be rated a 5 with both weak and exceptional elements being pointed out particularly. If you are going to figure in the weak element, you fairly have to figure in the strong element, and the average of them comes out to 5, so that's how I do it. But I know that's controversial. :)
    May 17 at 3:52AM
davywavy: I agree,Queen Doris. A technically bereft child can create a masterpiece while an art school graduate might serve up pretentious crap.Technical mastery is being accepted as a substitute for artistry. Having skill does not automatically give you access to beauty or humor or originality.
    May 17 at 5:09AM
Lucien van Oosten: I think for me if it has a flaw it is not a 5, a five means it is good with no issues, both technically and artistically if it has an issue, in either category, then it is not 5. a 5 means good no issues and a 6 rating means it knocked your socks off, WOW!!!.
It is difficult to do , give a lower rating, but I think honesty and integrity and compassion are all part of giving a good critique. False ratings, are a determent, a hindrance to all, it blocks improving and getting better for all, the artist and the site and the reviewer.
    cheers!!! and have great day.
    May 17 at 8:12AM
RavnAdairDesigns: Lucien, I know I sincerely want to critique people's work honestly, and I do give 4s and 4 1/2s, but even a 6 picture has weaknesses or places where it can be improved - I don't know if Any piece ever painted was perfect. So what I'm trying to give is a General rating of the work, which takes into account the averages of strong and weak elements. I think that grading methodology is much more sensitive to assessing the combined strengths and weaknesses of pieces. MY flaw as a reviewer, comes from the fact that I review pieces that strike my fancy, since I don't have time to review everything, and those tend to be pieces I like. So my marks tend to higher.
    May 17 at 8:30AM
Doris1022: Thank you all for responding...

The responses bring to mind, that reviewing is a personal experience. We all don't like the same things, and that is a good thing right? if NOT life would be boring...snore.

Just remember there is a person on the other side of the screen that may need some help and ENCOURAGEMENT. I have bad days and some time a kind remark really goes along way. I think we all desire kindness??

I am an artist first, yes I like simple, folk style art. My artist style sees the creative first and to me that is what I rank as a high score first, then the technical is considered. that is just me personally. I will always be me.
Thanks, Lucien, Davy, RavnAdair, for responding and a open communication on this in a kind of running fashion might help others to really pick up on what is important.
    May 17 at 2:26PM
kimartist: Ah, I see the obsession with rating people like eggs in the marketplace continues... Ooo, you're an AALARGE - pat, pat, fawn, fawn - we LIKE YOU and you get a special carton and place on the shelf. You're a SMALL and/or your shell has COLOR - not so desirable! - and you shall quickly be trundled off for processing/industrial use. Uh oh, you're shell is broken - basically you suck and we don't like you at all - off to the trash can for you.

Which works for eggs, but not for people, or their art.

Perfect/not perfect, lovely/not lovely, art/not art, etc., etc., ad infinitum. Some continue to defend their practice of letting their "inferiors" know that they are inferior... Which really means, of course, that they are letting you know who is superior!

Davywavy put it so succinctly and I agree with him completely: Art school ruins people. (Likewise for photography school.) Unfortunately, it continues to sail right over the Egg Raters' collective heads... Hackneyed. Trite. Cliched. Blatant plagaristic copies of other people's trailblazing work. Concepts that seem to defy the UNimaginative mind and UNaesthetic soul.

I have seen some technically-perfect crap from the art students here and elsewhere. (And I'm NOT talking about the little "adult school"/"continuing education" type classes that people take from real-world artists who have developed their own ideas and techniques after many grueling years of shaking off the crap they learned in art school. This would also include some of the excellent high school and college level art teachers out there who know better than to ruin their students.)

There are some folks here (and elsewhere) that can copy a photograph so well that it looks just like a photograph ("Wow, that looks so REAL!" the critics coo as they reach for the SIX button...) But I tell you: It's crap. It's the kind of thing you put over your couch and never look at again, because, quite frankly, you chose it because the greens in the trees matched the greens in the pillows on your couch. Here's another way you know it's crap: That artist may be fawned over by the sycophants of today, but their work will never go down in history and become eminently collectable. Why? Because it's TOO PERFECT. There's no SOUL. It looks THE SAME AS EVERYONE ELSE'S. It's so DONE BEFORE. It's TRITE, CLICHED, HACKNEYED, UNORIGINAL, LACKING IN IMAGINATION. And last, but not least: IT LOOKS JUST LIKE A PHOTO! Why, in the age of incredibly-advanced photography, do we need paintings that look just like photos?

    Can anyone say: HO HUM?

In an age when objects can be manufactured to look perfect and when photos can be taken that look more real than reality, ART needs to be DIFFERENT. Art needs to have VISION. Art needs to be something that NEVER EXISTED BEFORE until the artist created it. This means using unnatural colors, or distorting shapes, or putting incongruous elements together, or creating surreal/futuristic visions, or using techniques/materials that have never been used before and/or using them in ways that are unique. The true artist also has the duty to document/interpret CURRENT HISTORY - current cultural norms, ideas and the stuff of real life (ugly stuff like city streets, freeways, office interiors, etc.) The "quaint" paintings we see today of horses and buggys weren't so quaint back in the day! They were just the ugly, prosaic stuff of life.

So how do you rate REAL ART like a 12-pack of eggs? I ask you. Need I go on?

While the Egg Raters are busy looking for technically-perfect stuff that they could easily put over Grandma's couch (LOLA = Little Old Lady Art), people like me are looking for the unique, the different, the art that "takes chances," that "looks different," that does things that haven't been "done before," that "make a statement," that might "go down in history," that might start a new "movement," or "trend," etc.

This is the stuff REAL ART is made of. You don't even have to LIKE it. It doesn't even have to be something you would BUY for yourself or for someone else. And it really, Really, REALLY doesn't have to be "technically perfect," because what is technical perfection in a world where people (the artists) are trying to do something that hasn't been done before?
    May 17 at 2:30PM
Doris1022: Whoa, there Kim...phew you said a mouth full. lol
    Thanks for your thoughts too.
You bring up some good points.
I like the art being original, creative.
Not exactly perfect but out of the box thinking for impact and interest.
    That sounds like a VanGogh.

Kim, what I hear from you is you don't like the rating system, and think it should be deleted.
    May 17 at 3:44PM
kimartist: LOL. Something like that. Actually I would like to see it simplified to a Facebook-type system of "likes" with no "dislike" button. Then the site (FAR) will still be able to showcase the better work (to attract new customers and show off what kind of work is being produced here in this community) as the better/most popular works will still get the most number of likes and rise to the top. And those folks who are driven by competition (it's a natural/human drive) will still have a ranking and be motivated to produce/post more works in order to move up. In addition, I would change the reviewing system to one where neither person gets credit for the review until it's reciprocated. This will discourage the patently hostile/unkind/unhelpful/stoopid reviews, because no one will want to reciprocate them. But I know all this would probably take a total revamping of the site's code and is not likely to happen any time soon ;)
    May 17 at 5:13PM
MGTF Blue: I agree with RavnAdairDesigns, a picture can "knock your socks off" (as Lucien says) in the subject matter but have a fault (like a distraction in the background) and so it gets a 5 star rating even though there is that 'fault'.
    May 17 at 5:41PM
Doris1022: MGTF Blue you are recognized and heard. I agree with that thought too. art is more that the technical. Or at least I think that is what you are saying. smile
    May 17 at 5:54PM

Doris1022: Funny Goose story:

Yesteday my son was playing with our geese. there is one male and he is the boss right.
my son was petting him and they don't like to be petted. they like to pick at our pants and shoes but don't want you to pet them. the males have a honk and a high pitch scream. the females just honk.

Just some fyi...

Well my son puts the goose up on the trampoline and he is stepping around and falls in the hole at the springs and falls off like a maypop- thud and gets mad.
Caleb puts him back up there and this time he was walking around then jumpd off and soared to the ground real dignified.

I started clapping for him and he strutted with his wings out stretched and making his high pitch squeal. for five minutes. He is a nut. HE WAS SO PROUD OF HIMSELF!!
April 30 at 11:23AM
Badger: Two thought's. Why is this funny and why haven't you taught your son to treat animals with respect?
    April 30 at 1:32PM
davywavy: I have also had trouble getting my goose interested in the trampoline.I'm going to try using decoys.
    April 30 at 4:14PM
Keri Harrish: Why would a goose be interested in a trampoline?
    April 30 at 6:30PM
Sange: I agree with Badger! Why put a goose on a trampoline? Seriously!
    April 30 at 6:45PM
davywavy: Rebounding is supposed to be very healthy.

kimartist: "Redneck" means living by Biblical principles: Love of God, country and family; politeness, kindness, courtesy and respect toward strangers; loving your neighbor as yourself; being good stewards of the land... You know, backwards and backwoods concepts like that.
    May 3 at 9:26PM
Doris1022: I like that Kim! lol
    May 7 at 5:56PM

Doris1022: A sad day yet productive day. my son had to go back to school and It left me lonesome. but i got a lot of work done too.

Doris1022: I went to a wild life rescue center near our home today and it was very educational and a nice day too not hot and not cold just pleasant. I got a little buddy following me that was a camera hog or is it ham. lol
I took many shots of him hoping for them to be clear. we also got a good shot of a peacock. The emus were nesting and it was amazing to see them get on and off of the eggs without hurting them.
April 25 at 7:44PM
kimartist: Just a head's up: I just updated my review of Psalm 5:9 - telling you here, because I don't think the system will notify you?

I hope mixed media is OK, 'cause that's where I went with it...
    April 22 at 4:34AM
kimartist: Woo hoo, I did 5 more eggshell mosaics today - ACEO sized, THANK YOU very much! I'm starting to get the hang of it now (less and less glue goobers all the time, rofl), but I really do see the need to go bigger with this technique, so you get the credit for giving me the courage to try something on watercolor paper that's bigger than 5"x7" (just as soon as I can buy some, LOL)!
    April 24 at 3:04AM
Doris1022: Hey Kim, glad you tried some different things and are getting the hang of it. I really liked your mosaic. would love to see it up close.
