Some have washers and dryers, others still wash and dry the old way as here. The photo was taken in Chumpon a little Maya community hidden in the jungle of the Yucatan peninsula in the Mexican State of Quintana Roo. The village has no electrical power. The water comes from a cenote, a sinkhole in the limestone of the ancient riff. All the rivers and streams are underground here. The cenote is about a mile outside the village so the washing is done near the cenote in all kinds of containers. Elsewhere in Maya land woman are washing close in the rivers but the clear cenote water is too precious to do so as it is also drinking water. The laundries on the left at the close line are the traditional dress and slip of the costal Maya population of Quintana Roo. The dress is adorned with needlework. The gray monochrome color is unusual. Normally the needle works are in bright multi color. Camera Konica-Minolta Dimage Z2 Focal length 6 mm F# f/4 Exposure 1/50 ISO 350
