I'd have to say that when they came up w/ the common name for this particular perennial they sure got it wrong. Botanically known as HEMEROCALLIS it is more often referred to as a 'DayLily' but is NOT a Lily at all despite the similarity in it's thick-fleshed trumpet-shaped flowers.
Daylilies are one of the workhorses of my gardens. Virtually pest free, they easily tolerate frost and drought, thrive in many different climatic zones and are generally one of the lowest maintenance flowers in my gardens. Additionally, they grow in almost every color imagined. Truly the perfect perennial. Unlike the true LILY flower 'Daylilies' are edible and can be consumed raw or cooked. In Asia (where they originated) they are treated as a vegetable and are sold both fresh and dried in food markets.
In the image seen here (taken after dark) I was concentrating on photographing the center of this gorgeous golden yellow HEMEROCALLIS. These flowers don't last long so I often photograph in the evening as it is also easier to see the pollen then.....seen here at the lower right of this fully mature variety.
