Dragonfly

Twelve Spotted Skimmer

I have a new found fascination for dragonflies. I hadn't realized that there are more than 5000 known species. Dragonflies are expert fliers and they only eat prey they catch while flying. Nearly their entire head is eye, so they have incredible vision that encompasses almost every angle except directly behind their head.

This one used to be called a Ten Spotted Skimmer, or Dragonfly, because they used to count the spot across the thorax as one spot, now it is counted as two.

Mature males have twelve brown wing spots as well as eight white wing spots. The females and juveniles do not have the white wing spots. So this dragonfly is either a juvenile or a female.
