This pink sunrise occurred in 1970's Baja, Mexico, at San Juan de La Costa. This was before there were any roads to the area. At that time, the arroyo delta was an immense date plantation, which has since been destroyed by the phosphate mining operation as has the coastline. The surrounding fresh water oases have also been severely affected. In those days ranchers would ride a horse to La Paz in a day where many died of exhaustion upon arrival. A new horse would then be acquired for the return trip with the same result, thus making the trip the cost of a horse. The contestant rode a horse that survived half the distance as a teenager.
