The Red-bellied Woodpecker is most common in the southeast United States and used to be an uncommon bird to see in Minnesota, but in recent decades they have extended their range to the north, even in the winter months.

They get their name from the blush rose colored feathers on their bellies. Males have red feathers from the top of their heads down the back of their necks, while the females only have the red feathers on the their necks.
