The northern Tamandua [Tamandua mexicana] aka Giant Anteater, Oso Hormiguero [Spanish meaning: Bear Honey-Warrior]. They are native to South and Central America and southern Mexico, where they are found in deciduous forests, Mangrove swamps, and hardwood hammocks near sink holes and ponds.
Adults could reach about 30 inches in length, including the tail. The tail length varies from 14 to 27 inches. They weight about 8-10 pounds. Their snout is long and thin. They do not have any teeth. They are orange-yellow on the back with a large black patch which looks like a west. Their paws have long claws, longer on the forepaws, where the claw of the 3th toe is so long that the animals have to place their paws sideways. The soles have thick callus. They eat ants, termites and larvae of several insects which the extract with their long tongue. They often break the bark of tree to uncover the nests. The Northern Tamandua is considered endangered due to the destruction of their environment and being hunted for their meat and coats. The pelts are high priced black market items.
