Awesome, have done the same thing and the wait pays off every single time. Absolute dazzling with the fluttering detail. Contrast, lighting, amazing, would not change anything. These little creatures are teachable moments in the making. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you so very much! I will sit about an hour at a time shooting as many as 300 or so. I will do this several times a day and only get a few good ones! They are very hard to get!

A well deserved winner Willie. Like the clear focus on the feathers, and the colour mix against the background. I am wondering tho' - the 1/500, ISO 400 and f/8 are for your ambient light but what power setting did you use for the flash and how far away was it? I am trying to gain more knowledge to increase my luck at my next attempt (I posted a couple hummer images a while back looking for some insight). Thanx much

thank you so very much! the flash was set on ttl auto. It reeds the camera info and adjustes itself! The flash was setting closer to the subject than was the camera so that would make the flas mor intense! I am also using a soft box on the flash!

Ok - thanx much. I had read that if you put flash on manual and power ir down a bit you get a shorter flash duration thereby getting better freezing action on the wings, so I was curious....

what you read is probably right! I don't know too much about the flash. i just try to learn as I go!

This is an excellent capture of one of my favorite birds. I appreciate how difficult it is to get a clear and detailed shot of them as you have accomplished here. The bird stands out wonderfully from the background. Cropping out the feeder also adds to the photo. Great job!

Good capture and sharp focus on the eye, these birds can be hard to capture because their movements can be irregular and are so quick. The background is non-distracting and there is just enough blur in the wings to give the sense of motion.

A full body would have been good but you can't complain about this great shot. Sharp focus, clear details and a great shutter speed. Well done.

Very good job. I like how the wings appear still but slightly moving, like you caught him just as he was trying to go into action.

Excellent capture of this hummingbird. Nice detail in the feathers. Great focus and dof. Although it would have been nice to see the whole bird, I love the close view. Nicely done! Thanks for sharing.

Very nice capture. Like the way you have cropped the image to show just a part of the hummingbird. The background is nicely blurred. Good colour and focus.
