A great picture! I can see the wind blowing the palm trees here and can see the damage of the other one. I love this area and may go back this winter. I like the cloud effects and really add to the detail. Pleasure to view.

Heidi, this is a very cool look at a storm approaching. Can see where the the clouds have changed color and from your angle, I have the feeling of movement from them. Of course the palm trees dancing and bending over so much really are a great clue as well. Like the look of the under leaves that are showing off the different colors in them. Are those coconuts in them??? Not healthy to be near these guys just now! lol The composition I think is really good. You have the group of trees off to one side and the lone tree just about to the other side. Are those dunes to stop errosion? You get the slight hint I think also of a bit of sand flying about near the surfaceof the sand. Like the rust colored leaves(?) that have a nice perspective trail. Also like seeing just the hint of the tide coming in. Enjoyed your photo. Good Luck. Annie

Hi Annie, Thank you so much for your thorough and generous review as for your good wishes.
Yes, these are coconuts and they are usually a danger not only in a storm. But these guys wont fly in my direction but to the opposite. If they come down they will roll forward me but get stopped bey the water I'm standing in. I don't think that the get airborne. The are still green and unripe. It needs about 60mph to rep them of we had only 35 mph when the picture was taken. But you are right: the sand is flying. These dunes aren't really dunes but turtle nests. We have four of the endangered Sea turtle species nesting on our beaches. Our beaches are some of the last almost undisturbed beaches in the area. Sadly Ike's storm surge destroyed many of the nest and took a big bite out from our beach. The group of trees to the right are more Coconut palms. The tree to the left is an Mexican Almond tree.
The brown line aren't leafes but Seaweeds brought in by the storm surge. I had the picture planed a little different with the waves crashing on shore. But how it is oin open nature: Mother nature decided otherwise. All my other photos with the wawes got ruined by waterdrops and salt on my lense. Inpossible to shoot some more a half hour later were land under were I was standing. Truth the hurricane never came close the tight was about 30 feet above normal. I think seeing this hint of a tight is somethig people absolutly like or dislike. It's the point of discussion on this photo.

Great shot. Must be really windy there! Hope Ike didn't cause too much damage for you. I really like the bright colors in this shot, especially the beautiful blue sky.

Thanks for asking. Ike didn't touched the Yucatan it all. We are very thankful that we were spared this time. The 35 mph in the photo is the most we got with the winds. Only some broken plants but sadly the storm surge destroid many turtle nests.

But a have correct some. Sorry for being unclear in my comments. Ike didn't came through here. He fortunately never touched the Yucatan. That was just a wind band Ike send over. Only about 35 mph [57km]. And it's not a cell phone photo. I used my Sony DSC-H9.

You can see the way the wind makes the trees bend. The sharpnes is good, and so is your dof. I feel the composition had been even better if you crop as I have suggested. Then you will get more emphasis on the tree and not get distracted by all that sand. An alternative would have been to include some of the sea. The colors are warm and saturated.

Thank you for your insightful review. You are right with what is wrong with the photo sadly not with the fix. I tryed the cropping already. Even another tighter than that. It didn't work but flattened the picture. The photo locked god but like an commercial. That post is an compromise. Do you see the sea weed line? That is were the wave should have crashed on shore. Mother nature wasn't cooperating. All other pictures got ruined by water drops and salt on my lens. so since I didn't want the typical beach picture nicer the typical storm photo I made a compromise and posted this one.

I see your point, and you may perfectly well be right. I saw the sealine, and I thought that I either wanted more of it, or less sand. But framing can be extremely difficult sometimes.

Thanks. Framing is sometimes difficult. I had another idea thanks to your review. I may could blend one of the splatter-ruined pictures with this one. I'll try that.

Thank you for you generous and throuought review. Could you please explain what is WB since English isn't my first language I have trouble with some technical abbreviations.

Depending on the light source objects take on a colour cast. Our brains sort this out so a white shirt looks white unless we know it's a sunset etc.
Cameras while getting better but are not 100% at doing this and so sometimes things that we'd like to see as white have a different colour. In this image its fine, but if the clouds were just a little whiter I think it would make the sky pop.
Some editing programs have a little selector that you can click over a neutral area, or cloud and it will have a pretty good go at tweaking it. Sometimes it needs a few goes!

Thanks a lot for your outstanding information. I'm an idiot. WB means white balance. I should have taught. Excuse a German. I'm not so good with English abbreviations. My English is self taught. I know what White Balance is and how to work it. Yes my programs have it. I know how to change it on the camera. I just didn't think. Sorry that I bothered you.
