Please excuse me for using this term. I'll tell you why.
'Coolie' is a pejorative term used for low-wage labourers, typically those of Indian origin.
In the 19th century, during the British colonial era, the term was adopted for the transportation and employment of Asian labourers.
The word has had a variety of negative implications. In modern-day English, it is usually regarded as offensive. In India, its country of origin, it is considered a derogatory slur.
In modern Indian popular culture, coolies have often been portrayed as working-class heroes or anti-heroes. They are officially recognised by the government as working class, given licences to transport the luggage of travellers at fixed prices, and given a red-coloured uniform with a armband showing their official status. They are assured of a decent living.
In this picture, you see one such labourer carrying the luggage of a rail-traveller. For heavier luggage, trollies are used.
