I took this shot a couple of years ago during my visit to Kerala in South India, a tourist paradise. This was an adorable sight that drew a lot of tourists. A 'mahout' is an elephant rider, trainer, or keeper. Mahouts have been used since antiquity for both civilian and military purposes. Traditionally, mahouts came from ethnic groups with generations of elephant-keeping experience, with a mahout retaining its elephant throughout its working life or service years.
