Very well done. I love the affect the black paper gave. The detail you gave is grate just enough. The texture on the street with the rain nice touch. The bend in the brick wall adds depth and interest for the eye.

You can do lovely work. Stick with something you do well at like this and your angel. I do frog and wrens and frogs and wrens until they come out of my ears but they well. Set you self a goal and aim for it. That a series of angels in a art portfoilo and a resume into a gallery. make a appointment first. have them priced as framed and unframed. Get a matt and put a back on it with the painting inserted and wrap in cellophone neatly to show them how the painting could be sold unframed. have everything at your fingers tips so they know you are serious. A website and business card. sandy

aww thank you Sandy and thanks for the advice. I will def work on getting a collection together this year, what of Im a little undecided with. I was going to blow up a few of my landscapes, there are around four so far that Im really pleased with and think would make good larger canvases. But I am also slowly falling in love with my angels and cant help but drawn more of them, the only thing with those is I will need to work on them more, drawing people is much trickier than the landscapes, I still feel like I am getting a feel for them right now. I can see that they would make lovely paintings once I have mastered them though. What do you think would work well the most? The angels have gone down better on here than the landscapes.

I have these images in my head of how all of them will turn out, its just a matter of doing it. I am going to have to think long and hard about what Im doing with all of this, I was supposed to be trying to pursue a career in illustrating lol One word... fickle lol

I have got a website and business cards, I put them altogether last year. I am part of an art society and exhibited my work a few times last year but no sales from them :( I was going to do the craft fairs this year and am joining another art group that is trying to get local artists together so that should be fun. I think Im on the right tracks, but its going to be a long journey for me, Im slowly getting there :) When I get to the point of approaching galleries I will be sure to pick your brains with it all.

I wish I had more stars to give you. This is incredibly powerful, without being offensive or shocking. Just causes tears to stream down the face... The soldier is most probably weeping, too. I've had several close acquaintances and extended family members who have been in wars; in the battles themselves. Not one offered to talk about their experiences in depth. I never asked questions; just listened. Held a hand when it was appropriate.
Your artistry skills are evident; your talent at seeing something in your minds eye and transferring that to paper (or canvas, etc.) most wonderful, Corrina. Creating this using light pastels on black tinted card was perfect; you've wonderful instincts. What a very sad truth we all must live with, is war and the damage done. Life is such a precious gift...
Thank you for creating this lovely work of art, and for depicting such a strong yet sensitive anti-war type (or in the very least - THIS is what war is really all about). Thank you.

Aww this has got to one of the nicest reviews I have received. So detailed and really humbling to read. Thank you so much and I am so touched that all of that came across. Sorry for the late reply as usual time has just been skipping by and laughing at me lol

Corrina! This is amazing! Moving! Touching! Fantastic! Just look at all the details you have put in; the fold in the blanket and the gloves is crazy good! I don't know if your intention was to have the surrounding wall appear as if in a dream but it does to me and makes this all the more powerful as all that focus is on the mother and child and is as if nothing else matters...tears well...very good work! Great title, excellent story, fabulous composition, just exceptional!
(sorry no sixes left! : ( )

Thank you again Mr Jones. Well I thought I would give it a bash. Thats one good thing about the comps they force me to tackle different subjects which is all great drawing practice for me. Not sure what to go for next.

I quite like this Corrina, I can't really find too much fault with it artistically but wonder; did you alter the area of wall above and to the right of the child's feet as it seems to have a different texture to the rest of the wall and why has the soldier got a loop coming off of his shoulder?

Thanks for being brave enough to spend a few dollars and entering a traditional artwork against mixed media and traditional photographs. Good luck.

Re your comments, I too am anti war, sometimes quite vocally, that is why I joined the army. May I suggest that there are no innocents in warfare, not even children. In my five tours of active service I saw young children quite openly participating in acts that could lead to their being shot legitimately. What has surprised me in this contest is that no one has picked up that it is politicians that are the guilty party every time!

Thank you so much Badger, well i did blend in the far wall more as I thought seeing that it was in the distance it should be less detailed etc so yeah I can see that it looks like 2 different textures. Secondly I have no idea what the loop is lol, I was copying it from a photo and that was there, I assumed it was part of his kit, something to do with the gun maybe, who knows!

That is very true, I mean you look at some of these child soldiers out in places, so scary seeing such young children behave in that way but if that is how you are bought up then I guess you know no different. And I agree all of the wars are the stem from one route evil and that is money! Politicians, government, banks you name it its all down to cash at the end of the day. So sad that that this is the result of nothing but pure greed. Thanks for the review and as much as I was wary posting this, I have had such detailed reviews on it. It seems everyone has many a view on this subject.

Can traditional art be accepted within the comp? I am sooo sorry if I got it wrong, if I have I will remove it

Yeah Corrina, trad art is fine, I often make my contests open to all but I think you are only the second person to enter a trad art work in one. I can understand why this is because of the narrow mindedness of voters on FAR but what can you do!

Comment from PhotoVision

It does have a dramatic feel to it. It also has an almost hdr effect to it (photographic term) meaning it has captured a large tonal range. There is good detail and you have used light to good effect. Well done.

Ooh really? Thats great that you think that. It was quite tricky using just black and white on black but I thought it would really give it that gloomy timeless effect. Thank you so much for the review

Beautiful expressive pastel rendering with the emotive draw of this soldier embracing this child. Love the lit accentuations, your light to dark contrasting to create form as well as your textured mood and tone established. Nice diagonal viewpoint into the depths of the frame.

This comes like a shock for the unsuspecting viewer, whoso breath is taken away. It is of immense emotional impact. I can't imagine any image what could show the malady of war better than the suffering and death of the innocent. The fact that the picture has timeless quality and the place could be anywhere gives the viewer the feel: It could be my future there in the picture. You surely got the powerful image you wanted. Sorry the site tells me I cannot give you an extra star.
Best luck for the contest.

Thank you so much Cleo,I was a little scared with posting it as it isnt the most happiest of scenes. I didnt want to shoch anyone but I did want a really strong image to make people stop in their tracks, for a theme like this its needed. Had a few mixed reviews on it but overall its gone down well so phew lol Thank you so much and Happy New Year
reply by cleo85 on 02-Jan-2012
You're welcome. There is nothing happy about war and a theme as this need strong images. Pictures as this will always have mixed reviews. Even being almost icons today; Munchs Der Schrei [The Cry] and Picassos Guernica were controversial in there time.
