Eileen your work is simply stunning. The detail is exquisite.
How in tarnations do you manage to extract the fine details of feathers so exactly. do you have a link you can share....which tool do you use.
You got my vote.

wow, thanks so much for this extra vote of confidence Olga! No links to what I do, I just do it. In this case, I grab the Burn tool in PSE and just go around the edges making sure to grab only the background and leaving the feathers in tact. Not easy, but I think I've mastered it pretty well ;) (it's all in the transparency of how you use the burn tool :)

Thank you Eileen, must have been a fairly dark background to begin with. YES you have mastered it! Thanks again.

I think this study of a pelican,s head and plumage is wonderful, the details are clear and concise, the colours work well together, and the black background really sets the whole thing off.
best wishes

I love this the eye is in the center and then you see the lovely feathers and you have got great detail in them. Good background does not take away form the pelican. . Good luck with the hurrican

So happy you guys never lost power after all the dire warnings Eileen.
Your focus here is fantastic. WOW...the detail in the feathers is superb! I also like how clearly you've shown the texture of the beak...and, of course, those hairs on the top of his head are the best!!
The dark background lets his eye and face show in a really excellent way. My only issue (and it's a small one) is that I would have preferred to see the entire beak. It's such an amazing pose- I love the coy look about him- I would EASILY give him (and you) a six if you had included it. I'm curious as to why you cut it off like that???

this is the shot as you see it. I was too close for the entire beak, and me being who I am ( I'm sure Sange told you hehe) I look at things very graphically. I have always liked to be a bit different and am seeing contests with shots like this winning big time (not on FAR). So now you know the rest of the story :) Thanks so much Deb!

It's a beautiful shot Eileen. I'm not a bird person as you know so please don't be insulted...not at all how I meant it.

oh Deb, I never took it as an insult... :) you are so sweet. Love ya!!

Fabulous photo. The after photo work is so well done. Most of all I hope that you came through the storm alright. Have seen a lot of damage and hopefully you are first of all Safe and that the house was not damaged. Let us know how you are ~ Steve

We are safe and no damage whatsoever :) As we say in Florida, we dodged another bullet. And damn glad for it. We were totally prepared for whatever was to hit us and being prepared lessened the stress. thanks so much Steve for caring. And thanks so much for your wonderful review. :)

Just glad you all are safe. Now get back to creating fabulous photographs ; )

What a great capture of a Pelican Eileen. Sometimes I think an all black background can be too harsh, but in this photo it works really well, and the bird is standing out from it in the most excellent way.
Your photo is also pin sharp showing really clear and well defined details both in the feathers, the beak and the eye, and the exposure is perfect.
Perhaps the photo would have been even better showing more of the beak, but at the same time I also like a lot the tight cropping and the placement of the bird within the frame. Indeed a lovely and well taken portrait of a Pelican, and with an excellent DOF.

thanks so much Annie. You know My background of graphic designer lets me see things differently. So I am perhaps bolder than most. thanks for seeing that in this photo, :)

the only pain that Mathew gave me was it knocked out my cable..heck I'm a hurricane Camille survivor (F5 with 225mph winds) but Mathew was really nothing to it..mainly winds but it really never break past 100 mph. the only damage was beach side here Melbourne which is expected. oh well the only pain I have is waiting for things to restock and tolerate from the Yankees on how it was soooo bad..yeah right..wink..lol. this is cool. the angle of the shot of the bird giving ya a cute look is great. the capture of the light is great. the clarity is great. the image is balanced and eye appealing to the viewer. good eye and great job overall

we were certainly just a handful of the lucky ones Mark. Glad you faired ok, we lost no power or cable and damn glad of that. Stir crazy does not look good on me ;) Gas is still rather high but I filled up before and am good for a week. Thanks so much for your wonderful review. and you take care ok?

WOW again you got an unusual perspective - angle distance and frame choice are excellent - balance between negative and positive space fantastic ,
your bird is hyper clear and sharp into fine tiny details , I love the way e I filling the frame, a really special capture, excellent in color saturation, contrast and lighting, the dark background lets him stand out perfectly
Fantastic image, I just would place your signature on the upper border left as it takes the view from his nice eye to the writing - moving it up he gets the perfect free space letting his essence shine even more, well done, thanks for sharing
