Lovely view, almos abstract background which works well and gorgeous animals. I have to ask, did you live there? were they running about and you saw them grazing and remembered them as tehy made such a fantastic group, or did you find them especially, to paint, as they are standing on the edge of a cliff, echoing of the tree with the branch on the floor. Is the area filled with raised bare hills?

Thank you for your five star vote and your comments with all the questions. At the time we lived in New Mexico, USA. We visited Grand Canyon I think three times. I took somewhere over 800 pictures of the canyon. I took several pictures of these sheep on a trail leading to the canyon's edge. This is a painting I did by referencing, I think, seven different photos. The bottom foreground was from one photo. The sheep from another photo. The rocky background behind the sheep from a different photo. the foreground tree from a different photo. The canyon bluffs on the right, again a different photo. The background canyon, a different photo and the sky from imagination. Actually, I never just copy a photo. I prefer to study and create my own landscapes. Some of my landscapes only exist on the painting, not having any photo references. I hope I answered your questions.

Well done meticulous landscape.
The layered colors of the Grand Canyon are served well in this classic oil painting.
The long perspective into the distance with a slightly abstract appliqué is quite nice.
Good show all around.

Thank you very much. You saw what I am striving for. That blend of realism and abstraction that affords the viewer to see a realistic scene while enjoying the power of an abstract presentation. Very difficult to get to what my mind's eye sees.

Nice entry for the contest. I like the placement of the four rams and the way three of them are looking at you and the one mysterious ram is looking out to where he wants to go. The two trees at the bottom and side frame the subjects nicely. Very good color choices. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you for your five vote and your comments about noticing how I framed the Big Horn Sheep.

This is absolutely fabulous! The meticulous details in the landscape and the animals are indicative of the number of hours you spent completing this work. The canyon rock formations in the distance give it great depth. I think this will take first place! Did you use oils or acrylic!

Thank you very much for your six star vote and comments. I am an oil on canvas painter. This painting is oil on canvas. I have not discovered any other way to give the luster and color quality presented by oils.

I am not an artist but I will only contribute as an observer. I can see evidence of the many hours you have described. I do feel a nice balance in the overall scene. I like the colors which to me are very realistic and eye appealing. A lot of detail included. Very nice work.

I am a wannabe artist. Studied art and failed...my teacher told me "Olga, before you can paint you need to learn how to draw"....with that I quit. So, I do want to thank you for your artist's notes and for sharing the process with us.

This work is compelling and it does look like a lot of work however you had fun creating it and I bet the more you worked on it the more excited you became as you witnessed it's birth.

The precision of your work is so realistic that I thought it was a well saturated photograph.

The colour saturation is deliciously strong and tells us of a bright sunny day. The detail in the big horns' fur, the branches on the trees the distant horizon and the details of mother earth show consistency of paint application and brush stroke cohesiveness.

The pathway is straightforward with focal points sharp and well composed onto canvas. There is really a good feeling of unity throughout the art.

I wish I had more 6 stars left in my pocket to give you.....alas, I can only offer a Cyber 6.

Congratulations.....walk tall.

Excellent Job! I especially appreciate the fact that you went it to detail about what it takes to create such a piece. My best friend went to the Grand Canyon and sent me photos and post cards. I have to say your painting with such remarkable detail is strikingly realistic. Even the animals I have pictures of and you have captured them with stunning attention to detail. I cannot say enough about such Amazing Work. Thank you so much for Sharing :)
