The colors in this are beautiful. Such a nice combination of blending and shading. The scene is mood provoking. The background depicts the approaching nightfall colors nicely too. I miss seeing your paintings!

Thank you so much for your lovely review. I have family staying with me from Australia - been here for two months but they go home on Sunday so hope to get back into painting then! Suzanne

A brilliant and vibrant, fiery landscape and sunset scene that you have cleverly composed here simply off your own back and imagination, a real gift that not many possess. The colours are beautiful and bright and merge together fantastically in the sky, whilst the subtle rocks/ mountains beneath create good semi-silhouette qualities and also good perspective to the piece. Great work and best of luck in the competition! :)

A nice palette used in acrylic to depict the evening sunset which is silhouetted well with the range of hills.Personally I prefer to work in oils as they blend so much better than acrylics and subsequently the clouds and their tones would appear more realistic..I used to use acrylics but now I use them as an undercoat to my oils...you'll be surprised in the difference

Yes, Neil, I know what you mean. It's just that I live in a small bungalow and have no studio in which to leave my oil paintings to dry so mostly have to use acrylics as they dry so quickly! I do obviously prefer to use oils but it's just not practicable for me now. Suzanne

    May I recommend Griffin Alkyd
    fast drying oil paints
    available through Jacksons
art on line, can't fault them
    and dry on same day..some
    art shops do them too

Thanks for that, Neil. I do actually use Winsor & Newton Artisan water mixable oil colours and they do dry more quickly than regular oils but do still take a week or so. I usually get my supplies on line from the SAA so haven't used Jacksons much. I'll have to give them a try though as if they dry in a day that would be brilliant! Thanks for taking time to let me know. Suzanne

Impressive capture rendered in blazing warm hues with a contrasting silhouette!

Better it you included more of the mid portion as it is almost totally cropped as opposed to the great side cropping.

Thanks for sharing...

Many thanks, Dick, for your nice review. Not quite sure what you mean about the middle bit but thanks for your input. Suzanne

The very slim silhouette image at the "valley"...;-))

Thank you. Due to my cropping I'm afraid! Suzanne

What a great work of art Suzanne. A perfect entry for the contest. I like how the majority of the scene is taken up by the multi colored clouds in the sky. The patches of dark give a real depth to the sunset. The dark mountains in the foreground make for a wonderful framing element. Best of fortune Suzanne in the contest ~ Steve

Suzanne,
A beautiful picture of the sky in flames as the sunsets over the valley in the silhouetted hills on either side of the valley the trees adding interesting shapes & points of view, while above the sky is alive & ever changing by the second. beautiful artistic composition, created with very skilful brushwork, beautiful choice & blending of your colours to bring this sunset to life.

I have done a few of these. It is always a pleasure to see one done well. When you look a the sky at sunset, I mean really look at it, you can see a multitude of colors braced by the darkened earth below. This painting captures that view very well. Reasons for my five vote.

Those sky colors are impressive. It is not only a sailor's delight like in the old rhyme, but a delight for the viewer as well. The dark mountain silhouettes below and the dark sky above emphasize the fabulous illuminated clouds beautifully. It is a pleasure to review this painting.
