Stacey Nagy: I want to thank all who voted for A Lonesome Cowboy in the Before And After contest. This was a really fun contest with tons of fun and creative entries. And Skyangel, I want to thank you for creating this contest. I hope to see similar types in the future. Also, Echo, your recent contest was also a great one and so much fun! I am sorry that I did not thank you for creating it earlier! Let's continue creating these fun and different contests!!!
January 19 at 4:12PM
donkeyoatey: Congratus to you on a great piece! You are correct, they WERE fun, and it is nice to have different contests to spark ones creativity and imagination!
    January 19 at 5:44PM
Shakeadog: Yes donkey, I just created one, outside the square.
    January 25 at 10:59PM
blairwacha: Only thing I'd ask is that more blind contests are done. I know a lot of people who are hesitant to participate in named contests. I won't enter one in most circumstances. Even though the artist may not always be very well concealed in a blind contest, chances are in a blind contest that it's the photo being voted on and not the artist... Just one man's opinion.
    January 28 at 8:45PM
blairwacha: OH ya, Stacey, congratulations on your win. There were some pretty good entries in the before/after contest.

Stacey Nagy: Please go look at david F latest picture. He did the most beautiful picture of my horse Lulu. I posted a photo of her a short time ago, and he asked me if her could draw her, which of course I welcomed. And it looks just like her, her smile, delicate face, alert ears, and the look in her eyes. It is amazing!!!! Thank you David!!!!!

Stacey Nagy: OOPS.. I wish to apologize. On a picture I posted Brown In Clarksdale, I mistakenly said it is the Clarksdale from the song Last TrainTo Clarksdale. Well, I was given wrong information from someone who will rename nameless (my nameless hubby..LOL). That song is actually The Last Train To Clarksville. This town is actually the town from the song Walking Into Clarksdale from the album by the same name, sung by two members of Led Zepplin. Clarksdale, located in the Mississippi Delta is said to be home of the Delta Blues. I am so embarrassed..OOPS.
December 10 at 12:16PM
Cassandra01: Shame on you! LOL Still a great shot!
    December 10 at 1:14PM
dream alone: Dont' be embarrassed. It's okay to have "The Monkees" on your mind!
    December 10 at 3:07PM
phil1950: That's cool Stacey we all make mistakes. Walking Into Clarkesdale was done by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant from Led Zepplin.
    December 10 at 4:43PM
Badger: They should have been done for recording it, Zep were great as a quartet but the Monkees rock compared to the solo careers of Mesers Plant and Page.
    December 10 at 5:05PM
Tony B: Congratulations Stacey for coming in strong on the Seeing Green contest, a wonderful piece you presented us with.
    December 20 at 6:23PM
kimartist: Congrats on winning with "California Lighthouse" - I wasn't sure at first if a clear winner was going to come through, but I'm really ecstatic that you WON - WOoHOo! o/

Stacey Nagy: Has anybody gotten a message in the last couple of days from "anonymous member" requesting you write to them regarding an image of yours? I got two, and had not yet replied to the listed email address. But, I just now found out from a friend that he also received a message listing THE SAME EMAIL ADDRESS, but when he tried to reply to the email address, it did not go through. I found that odd. I wanted to check if others have had this also happen.

FanArtReview: The site does permit non registered members to contact artist. The purpose is to allow inquiries about art without having to register. From time to time this leads to spam. It is best to not write these individuals unless there is a clear coherent message (such as interest in purchasing a specific work).
    November 19 at 11:30PM
blairwacha: I was thinking that might be what it was, Tom when I responded. The address came back as undeliverable. Odd. I'd suggest that no one try to respond.
    November 20 at 8:14AM
michaelsimages: recived a message from anonymous. I never respond to "anonymous." If anyone wants a serious response, I think they will at least use a first name
    November 22 at 9:26AM
blairwacha: I just got another from the same email address. I did not try to respond this time.

Stacey Nagy: Little Dirt at FanStory.com by His Grayness
Somebody used a photo of mine as the illustration for their poem Little Dirt. That poem is so touching, it made me cry, and I immediately had to call my Mom to read it to her....and I am not a poetry person. If you get a chance, go to our sister site (under HOME above) and read it. I have had many images used in the past, but this writing is special.
November 18 at 7:30PM
blairwacha: I can't log in using my FAR login in stuff, Stacey. Which photo of yours did they use?
    November 18 at 7:38PM
donkeyoatey: WOW!!! It IS special, what an honor for you!
    November 18 at 8:23PM
Stacey Nagy: To log in, you have to sign up with at least a freebee membership. Then, when people use your images, you can read their work.
    November 18 at 8:27PM
donkeyoatey: you should list the author so we can find it, amazing isn't it how moving it can be when someone uses your work!
    November 18 at 8:40PM
Stacey Nagy: The author of Little Dirt is His Grayness.
    November 18 at 8:44PM
Happy Snappy: That would be a great honour to have your work chosen. Well done Stacey!
    November 19 at 3:55AM
avmurray: I have read the poem, and it is really lovely and so full of wisdom. It is impossible not to be touched when reading it.
    November 20 at 12:06PM
kimartist: Just read it. Very touching indeed! :)

Stacey Nagy: HELP WANTED...Photo equipment advice...
I am in the market for a decent Macro lens. I have a Nikon D80. I would love to get a top of the line Nikkor lens, but money is an issue. For the last several years, I have been using a set of close up filters with pretty good results...if you like extreme narrow DOF, need for perfect lighting only, and absolutely NO breeze..LOL I would like to get advise on what would be an acceptable lens. Thanking you all in advance!
November 12 at 8:17PM
Sange: I bought the TOKINA... Half the price of Nikkor. They compared it in reviews. I like it. Check it out. ;) or use mine when you are here visiting! ;)
    November 12 at 8:27PM
Cephus: Got your message but no reply button - strange?
I am a Canon user and am not at all familiar with Nikons. That said, I have heard great things about the Nikon 105mm macro.

Also, although I have not used any third party lenses, have heard that there is no such thing as a bad macro lens and that they all will give a great image.

That said, I would recommend a macro lens of 90 to 105mm. This will allow the camera to move sufficiently far from the subject to if an insect, not be right in their face and spook them too badly. On this and other subjects, the working space is also sufficiently large to allow for decent light. Some of the short macro lenses have a tendency to block light and when you are shooting macro, you need all of the light that you can get.

I for one do not normally use auto focusing on macro, when up close, it is rather hard to get the macro to focus on what you want and as the dof is so small, almost perfect focus accuracy is required.

Another point, some macro lenses stay the same length when focusing and some get longer. A lens that stays the same length is much easier to use.

Another issue, Image Stablization. This can be of help but when shooting macro a lens with 3-4 stops of stablization will see this fade to about one stop at close macro distances.

If you do a lot of macro work, the need for a macro flash usually enters the realm. Good macro flashes are rather expensive, the Canon Ring is about $550 and the dual small flash version is about $1,000. I would guess that the Nikon ones are about the same cost. The led ring lights do not have the oupput of a flash and may work for still subjects when using a tripod but are not a pracical replacement for a true macro flash.

    A couple of comments:
If you shoot an insect at maximum magnification and it is not facing you head on, if shooting at a large aperture, both eyes may not be in focus.

If is quite common for a subject to require the f16 mark which is really when the extension factor is thrown in a true f-number of about f32, thus the need for a lot of light.

When shooting macro, camera shake becomes a manor issue, like when shooting with a telephoto.

Tripods are great for macro work indoors but try chasing an insect with a tripod outdoors. Also, I did not beliebve that St. Louis was a windy city and then when I started doing macro I found out that there is never a windless day here. As a compromise, I find a unipod to be great.

    Does this help?
    November 12 at 8:48PM
Sorin Fota: Hi, I read your need, I read also what Mr Cephus said. His advice is rather extensive and had to be kept for future reading. I appreciate all what he said. However, from my experience, I have a D90 (I do not know D80), and I have been advised for a AF-S Micro Nikkor 60mm 1:2.8G. I am satisfied with it. I used also for macro an AF Nikkor 28-100 1:3.5-5.6G. The difference I noticed is hat with the first I could get extremely closer, while with the second some distance was needed to be in perfect focus. Anyhow in both cases you need tripod. I thing that as a start Nikkor 60mm will do. I have been also told that Tamron is also worth, being as good as Nikkor but at lower price, the difference being the name... Good luck in choosing and shooting!

Stacey Nagy: I want to thank you guys for all your help!
    November 13 at 11:20AM
blairwacha: Stacey, have you thought about extension tubes? A pretty cheap alternative and often has great results, depending on the lens you're using them with. You have no loss of light or extra distortion because you're not adding any new glass to the mix. Jairos has had really good results using them. I've tried them with longer lenses and not liked them, but with lenses of a 100 mm or so and shorter, they often work well. This is coming from someone who does no macro work now, but I used to in the days of film.
    November 13 at 2:07PM
Stacey Nagy: Thanks Blair, I have thought of tubes. But have been using the closeup filters, which i think may be just as good. I will probably check on EBay for something used. I have bought used equipment on eBay before, and have always been pleased. I am leaning towards a used Nikon 105 macro. I had considered a Nikon 28-105 macro new, quite inexpensive, but after discussing that with Cephus, a dedicated fixed macro would really be best. But I am still researching and asking advice.
    November 13 at 2:22PM
blairwacha: I think extension tubes are quite a bit better than filters because you're not adding optics, just changing focal length. A dedicated macro lens can't be beat though.
    November 13 at 3:09PM
Cephus: Use of extension tubes does cause a light loss and they do require an increased exposure. The lack of glass means that they do not introduce additional distortions. When ever you move the lens away from the camera body, the light is spread out over a larger area and an effective light loss occurs. The main problem with extension tubes is that a lens with an extension tube will only focus for a very limited distance ranges and tubes have to be added or removed to changed the magnification which can be a big problem outdoors.

Stacey Nagy: I wish to apologize to the people who voted for my Cedar Waxwing in the Bird Study contest. I also wish to apologize to the organizer. My picture was a mixed media, and the contest specifically said no mixed media. I am generally so careful when posting for contests. But this time I goofed....my Mom has been real sick, and I had been preoccupied, and did not double check when I posted. As soon as I realized, I did tell Tom, and we changed it from a contest entry to a regular post. Again, I am sorry. But, a lesson was learned...ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK THE RULES BEFORE POSTING TO A CONTEST.
August 20 at 9:39PM
donkeyoatey: I hvae done it as well..not checked close as I should..we are all human! It is upto the organizer to keep a watch on the entries!

Stacey Nagy: Thanks Tom!

There seems to have been confusion among many as to what was and was not mixed media. I am so pleased that Tom listened to suggestions about clarifying this better. I just read the new section on Mixed Media, and can not see how there can be any more misunderstandings. Thanks again, Tom!
August 8 at 11:01PM
P W RYAN: where did you find the new section? I looked on the home page, and all through forum threads.....would love to read up! Thanks!
