I know, I know most of you dislike pictures were the main subject is centered, especially when that main subject is the sun….It's boring to look at it, I hear. Is it? - I'm usually not a friend of centering subjects either but in this case, I like it. Anything else would damage the almost perfect symmetry. Beside there were no other way to capture the whole phenomenon's. That's true that isn't just another sunrise. Look closely. This picture is taken just before sunrise. What you see isn't the sun but a mirage of the sun. Luck closely and you will see this "sun" has a lenticular shape above the waterline at the horizon but there isn't sun at all on a little spot direct at the waterline. The fuzzy horizon is part of the mirage. But that isn't all. Above the clouds it looks like anti crepuscular rays, but is it? It isn't. These are shadows…
For all I found out so far it must be some variation of the "Green Flash" Phenomenon but I'm no scientist. I've send the picture to a specialist but haven't an answer jet. I'll update soon I know more.
The picture was taken on Mexico's Caribbean coast at the Yucatan peninsula in the State of Quintana Roo.
