The Black Swan [Cygnus atratus] is a waterfowl originated in Australia. First discovered by Europeans in 1697 by Willem de Vlamingh’s Expedition, the species was not documented until the eighteenth century.
I met Odile at the zoo in San Antonio, Texas. She was, other than her fairytale namesake, very friendly and posed for me. Odile is a character in Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.
The Black Swan is a widely known literary and artistic
image often used as a antipode to the famous White Swan.
