Everybody knows Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights. But have you heart of the phenomenon of Iridescent Clouds? They are in color as impressing as Aurora Borealis, but have a very different cause. Iridescent clouds are caused by small ice crystals in clouds scattering light. If these ice crystals are of similar size, their cumulative effect is seen as color.
The photo was taken at 5:27 am, before sunrise at the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. The diffuse appearance of sky and clouds is part of the phenomenon.
