this stairway at my last children's home weighed heavily on me for years. At its base I had stood when I had wet my bed once for all to know-(refugees shipped about Europe, my mother says I was absolutely dry when she left me over there at 2-but I also remember many things which happened later when I was alone, not the least us kids shipped about in cold trains, with no food or proper clothes. I know I was at times odd, fear of hunger, I would gather acorns and hide them behind the boiler at 5- I remember fat, well fed GI's too clearly) - At that Home no one threatened, shouted or smacked, ever- they had other ways. They were three nuns and we were over fifty children and they grew our food too. I learnt much from them on classroom control- I returned in the last decades and the stair way was nothing like as huge as I remembered it- I have painted it time and again. They are now a private school and a school which specialises in the treatment of problem children. I know how they do it, I remember still!
