Elphaba is the main character of the Novel The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire [published 1995]. It was adapted into the Musical Wicked, an instant hit, which currently celebrates its 10th anniversary on Broadway.
The Novel is a cynical look of the Land of Oz [The wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Braun, Film
It is the first Book of the Series The Wicket Years. It was followed by Son of the Witch [2005], A Lion among Man [2008], and Out of Oz [2011].
The take on Elphaba is my own by artistic license. Nevertheless I agree with the author that Elphaba is not wicked by nature.
