While staying in Rome, our apartment had an alley in the back. Venders would come up and down the alley selling bread, fruits, and all manner of things. The apartment across from us had a signal bell which was rung when a particular vender would pass by to attract his attention and deliver his wares to the people in the apartment. I thought that the bell with it's little tin roof made for a quaint and very useful messaging system. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
