These unusual CHRYSANTHEMUMS fall into the hardy 'Mum' category. Also known as 'Fuji Mums', Spider Mums bring a very distinctive flower form to the garden. A traditional CHRYSANTHEMUM flower features a typical daisy-like shape with florets (aka- petals) arranged in concentric circles. In Spider Mums, as pictured here, the florets are elongated and tubular.

CHRYSANTHEMUMS originated in China and in Chinese culture, this flower along with the plum, bamboo and orchid are collectively referred to as the Four Noble Ones. Only the noble were allowed to grow them in their gardens. To this day they believe that the CHRYSANTHEMUM is a symbol of the sun, and the way in which this flower opens its petals denotes perfection. Watching them open in my gardens I have to agree.
