Frozen in mid air

Defying Gravity

Aphids are tiny insects that are classed as one of the main pests to agriculture all over the world. There are 250 species that are seriously destructive, sucking sap from plants and costing millions of £££/$$$ worth of damage every year. They vary in length from 1 to 10 millimetres (0.04 to 0.39 in).

Whilst photographing in a field in the Lake District, UK last weekend I came across this tiny Aphid, around 3mm (0.12 inches) hanging frozen in mid air, nothing at all overhead to suspend it. I was baffled. I captured a couple of shots of this bizarre scene, and upon very close inspection of the photograph, it's 4 top legs are tied up with spider web, which must have been attached to the nearest tree or something (about 20m away!) and the wind was holding it? I still can't work it out, but it was definitely hanging in mid air as you can see from the posture!!!
