A rhino walks in the sunset

Rhino Sunset

by Pamela Ruggiero

I paint a lot about endangered animals. The Sumatran rhino number only 80 animals in the wild. The black rhino number around 5,000-6,000 having made a comeback through conservation. The white Rhino is Near Threatened in status. But, it also has made a comeback. Between 19,000 and 21, 000 in the wild. The Javan rhino is also critically endangered with less than 100 in the wild.

The great horned rhino number 3,500. Only 30,000 rhinos in the world for all sub species combined. Mist are white rhinos.

So, why Rhino Sunset? We may be seeing an extinction of Asian rhinos. So, this rhino is right under the sunset of the species. The sunset looks loosely like a bird with red head and yellow body. The texture and highlights in the sky are deliberately not blended. This is not meant to be realistic. The markings, to me needed to be raw and colorful. The yellow markings surround the rhino. They are over the bird. Sorry for such long notes.

The rhino is walking on a slope into extinction and has reached the ever elusive sunset. I hope rhino horn becomes illegal like ivory.
