The Color White - Art Contest Entry
12 X 12 pastel on pastel board
Post Type: Traditional Art
Mixed Media: None | I tried to create a piece for the Christmas art contest last year and hated the result. So I bought a jar of acrylic ground for pastel and painted over my pastel board allowing all the previous pigment to mix with the ground. It resulted in a textured gray brown surface that would hold additional pastel. I decided to use this as an experiment for the color white contest. Since white is rarely pure white I decided to create a still life of a trio of white objects and attempt to recreate the colors reflected from their surroundings. I began by using the palest brown, yellow and pure white pastels to create my background and light source. I wanted to create the effect of light coming through an unseen window and creating a reflection on the neutral wall on the opposite side if the unseen window. The texture of the pastel ground worked perfectly to create the texture I. Wanted to keep the scene from becoming flat like those of a first grader drawing. I then sketched out my enamel pitcher, flower and bud, and the white squash gourd. I created roundness and details on the flowers and other elements using white and reflected colors. I hope you like the end result.
