Red Winged Blackbirds are known for their boldness when protecting their nesting areas. They will often group together and attack larger birds, such as crows and hawks if they fly over their nesting area.

During breeding season Red Wing Blackbirds usually roost alone on their territories. Outside of breeding they sometimes roost with one another in huge concentrations.
