The Tayra [Eira barbara], aka Cabeza de Viejo, San Hool is a carnivorous animal native to Southern Mexico and Central America. Adults weight about fourteen pounds. The body is about three foot without the tail which varies in length. The Spanish name Cabeza de Viejo [Old Mans Head] refato the pal gay, sometimes yellowish-brown color of its head. Its legs. Back and tail are black, with a white diamond shape on its throat Given the length of its body and tail, its extremities are perceived as disproportional short. The forepaws of the Tayra are longer than its hind paws. The Tayra has five toes non-retractile claws on each on each paw. The claws on the forepaws are larger than the claws on the hind paws. The Tayra is usually active during the day, although sometimes roams at night. It is mainly a ground dweller, but also a good climber and swimmer. The Tyra lives in areas of low deciduous tropical forest hardwood hummocks, mangrove swamps, and grasslands. The animal is in Danger of Extinction. [Mammals of the Yucatan Peninsula, Editorial Dante S.A. de C.V. 2005]. I used old paper prints of my own photos and drawings from above mentioned book as reference.
