The Minnesota State bird is the Common Loon. They have four distinct calls that most Minnesotans recognize.

The four calls are:
The hoot, which is a one note call that sounds like they are saying 'hot', which is used mainly by family members to check on their well being and to locate each other.

The yodel, which is only given by the male to defend his territory. It is a long, rising call with repetitive notes that can last up to six seconds.

The tremolo, which is also known as the cray laugh. It is used to signal alarm and sometimes at night to defend and advertise their territory.

The wail, which sounds a lot like a wolf's howl. This is the most common call and is used in social interactions and to regain contact with a mate as well as being an answer to other loon's tremolos.
