I wanted to take an original approach to this flower art contest. I looked through my inspiration folder and looked at all of the unique flowers I could create and when I spotted the sea oats I had an aha moment. Sea oats would not be a traditional flower with petals but I think they are beautiful. Since I love to paint beach Scenes I thought this was the perfect marriage for this entry. Sea oat blooms are in fact a collection of seeds that help this plant propagate and protect our beach areas from erosion. Whether I make it in this contest or not I had fun creating this piece and learned some new techniques in pursuit of mastering this medium. I loosely sketched out my areas and completed a series of watercolor washes for each element. I allowed each wash to completely dry before adding another. Hope you enjoy!
