Velvet Antlers

When deer antlers grow, the furry membrane that covers them is called velvet. Underneath this furry membrane, the antlers are supplied with blood and nutrients from veins that run outside of the antlers and back down the to the base, which is called a the pedicle, where the antlers form on the frontal bone of the skull. Deer shed this protective coating once their antlers are hardened.
