Minnesota Wildflower

Orange Hawkweed

This Minnesota Wildflower is of the daisy family and has several names. Most commonly around here it is called Orange Hawkweed. It is also know as Fox-and-cubs, Devil's Paintbrush, Grim-the collier, Tawny Hawkweed and Orange Hawkbit.

The various names are in reference to a few things, the belief that hawks eat the wildflowers which contributes to their superb eyesight, and the plant has small black hairs on the stems which are reminiscent of a coal minor covered in colliery grime. Not sure why it is referred to as Fox-and-cubs, maybe because often times they grow in orange clusters. The seed heads look very much like dandelion puffs.
