This illustration depicts a handmade Mexican Bowie-type knife the artist had, and used in Baja, Mexico, during the 1960's and early 1970's. It was called a machete by natives, and very versatile. I could chop hardwood, slice leather, fillet fish etc. or the sharp tip was good for cactus spine surgery! The illustration is now in a fictional book based in part on some of the author's experiences. In the book the pearls fit in a chamber in the handle accessible by removing the cap on the end of the handle.
