that is the motto of Scunthorpe, the steelworks town I grew up in, because the heavens blaze red at times from the salt and pepper pots- and people flooded there for the work, from everywhere once Iron ore was found. It had been just five villages at the beginning of the century. It became a lively, multi-cultural town which gave everyone a good living.
from my first book 'Paper Battleships'. which describes this-
.then my friends and I would saunter
By the slag heaps in our best
Breathing in the thick red Wednesday dust
The yellow smog came on Tuesdays
Spewing from the chimney pots
Wearing bright white socks
We had to wear all week
Not hit by Monday?s wash covering all
in thin black smoke.
