Expressions - Art Contest Entry
This is one of our group of friends, David Hill and he does literally scowl all the while. One of his main attributes is to be so bluntly honest, he rubs most people up the wrong way, However, I was well used to that as my dad Semen Telewny, was Ukrainian, and they are equally blunt, especially as dad was a free- lance journalist world known in their diaspora, who had strong opinions, and my mum was blunt to the point of comedy at times. It was on my first day attending the art group at Jesus Centre and he walked in. He was a regular at the Writers' Group I had run for years at the Methodist Church Ashram, so he sat next to me to chat and I proceeded to paint him, for want of anything else to paint. You can see by his clothes, he was very gentlemanly in his dress but also very flamboyant. I loved his strongly-coloured expensive shirts and ties. He had been a teacher but couldn't abide the little blighters but he was also an excellent writer. I kept trying to persuade him to send his stuff to the BBC or publishers. Often those who can are least inclined to do so. He had very little patience and several wives. One wife and a son are in America. He was a strident atheist and argues the point constantly- but comes to all our religiously inclined gatherings, also plays string instruments. As we painted, he would play music, so he was very popular with us for that. I have tales of his eccentricities to cobble dogs with as we were good friends. He was and is usually on the look out for another wife though he has a girlfriend, whom he keeps at bay in her quest for a wedding ring, even when he was very sick recently.
