STORIES by ORPHANS is a compilation of stories told by orphans in a settlement started by my English grandparents when Uganda was a British protectorate. As I understand it, it wasn't even an actual country in those days. I learned about the settlement of orphans in Maska from a Ugandan attorney who, with enormous difficulty, helped me obtain a certified copy of my English father's Birth Certificate. (The original record of his birth was burned in a fire during the Idi Amin regime. ) I had two hours to create this cover for a website, which is one of the places where the project will be advertised. I was trying to come up with something under pressure that was very eye catching among the other African children's books I saw on the Internet. The crested crane is the national bird of Uganda and is on the flag. A percentage of any actual profits from the sale of the book will go back to Kennedy Matovu and the children. The Ugandan government no longer helps the children and they are doing poorly. At best they live on corn, beans and cheap oil added to the corn. Nonetheless, some of the older children know English and have some schooling. In the meantime, I will be trying to raise donations toward self-publishing and advertising STORIES by ORPHANS in the United States. (Anyone interested in contributing even the smallest amount toward the publication and advertising of this project is more than welcome to contact me at campoponies@yahoo.com, and send it by Pay Pal at that email address. Victoria Auberon is my fiction pen name, not my real name. )
