This is a photo of an unusual colored black-capped chickadd(Poecile atricapillus) that started showing up to our tube feeder the beginning of January. It?s pale color is due to Leucism,an abnormal condition of reduced pigmentation that is marked by overall pale coloration or patches of reduced pigment. It is caused by a genetic mutation which inhibits melanin and other pigments from being deposited in feathers, hair,or skin, but does not affect the eyes. I have not noticed it being treated any differently by the *normal* colored chickadees, and it?s call is the same. I have had to resort to propping up the tube feeder on the ground against the pole to get it to land on one of the branches in order to photograph it. It will be interesting to see if it hangs around after winter is through,or returns to wherever it came from. Because of it?s place color,we have named it *Casper* after the cartoon character *Casper The Friendly Ghost*. Adjusted sharpness, brightness, color, edited out minor background distractions.
