Kookaburra laugh and they can be heard from quite a distance. Their call is used to establish territory among family groups, most often at dawn and dusk. One bird starts with a low, hiccuping chuckle, then throws its head back in raucous laughter. I often hear them as I walk around various places but quite often they are too high up in the trees to be seen or photograph.
