I took numerous pics of hedges, deciding on the ones I copied after resizing in photoshop, and formed a collage of sorts, hoping to emphasize several benefits of hedgerows in today's society. Hedgerows are used in residential homesteads to help provide privacy, beauty and create edges to control weeds, pollution, erosion, snowbanks, and wind. We see rows of trees along banks of highways for beauty, to help prevent soil erosion and mudslides. In my photo, the spring row of flower shrub and green burning bushes, become a vibrant row of fall burning bushes, while the continuing hedge of flower shrubs remain strong trees that help the gravel, rock, and driveway stay intact. The 3rd image at the top along the house foundation (some above) helps these ways with protecting the house, in part. Hedgerows of shrubbery, flowers, and the like enhance property values with their beauty and mentioned good purposes. According to Geoff Lawton, by defining our edges, we can better control weeds, pests, wind, aerial chemicals, or water. Hedges are often used along a fence line, property line, or along the foundation of a house. The ancient hedgerows of the English and Irish countrysides were used as property boundaries, defense barriers, and livestock paddock dividers. After much of that practice vanished over the years, negative results included ?more- soil erosion, pests, wind, dust, and far less biodiversity?. When tree growths are sparse or rare on a property, ?hedgerows became essential wildlife refuges?.
