Morrie Turner drawing his Wee Pals comic strip

A Great Man

8 years ago today we lost a great man, my dear friend Morrie Turner. Morrie was the cartoonist who created the Wee Pals comic strip, many books, and a couple of different children's programs. Morrie was the first African American cartoonist to have his comic strip syndicated. Morrie was the kindest, sweetest, most loving person I have ever had the privilege to call a friend. His message of unity and equality was an important gift to all who followed his work. Years ago I was taking a photography class and had a portrait assignment. He allowed me to come in while he was working on his comic strip to photograph him. This is one of my most treasured images of that experience. An experience I will always treasure. RIP Sweet Morrie. You were a gift to all.
