I Can Almost Hear It Art Contest Contest Entry
You rarely hear a butterfly that is noisy. Most are silent just like sound to the deaf. In 2006 I had a sinus infection. I was on antibiotic Augmentin day 9 of a 10 day dose. I went to bed hearing and awoke totally deaf. Deaf permanently for my sinus infection had infected the blood supply to the Cochlea killing part of it and nerve fibers that conduct sound. The Cochlea is a hollow spiral tube usually coiled like a snail shell that contains the sensory organ of hearing. I lived in a totally silent deaf world for 2 years. I often said, I almost can hear it. Nah, I heard nothing. Then I received a Cochlear Implant. A Implant bypasses the damaged areas of the ear and stimulates the auditory nerve. Signals are generated and sent to the brain. A Processor is worn externally to send sounds to the implant. Where there once was Silence there now is Music to my ears. I am Beyond Lucky but Blessed. Butterflies however still are silent.
