Over three years when I went back to my art, I did this pastel portrait on Canson Mi-teintes pastel paper, of Delmoe, my brother, and spouse, Ann. From two separate references, I merged them into one painting. I love this couple dearly. Never having had training, he is an artist of sorts in stone- and woodwork, building a lovely two-story home. He and his first wife (killed in an auto accident at age 33); later, Ann, and their girls carried large river rocks. One of the boulders that helps hold the upper-level weighs about 1200 lb. He also built a rock/stone-covered basement with: rock basin, shower, laundry room, sidewalk. Delmoe was a great athlete, able to walk on his hands across the gym, the yard, and swim, rock/mountain climb, ride his bikes, build unusual family swings, exercise about two hours each morning for several years after having B-Cell Lymphatic Leukemia; then, one hour. Approximately 13 years into this illness, he developed Stage Four Melanoma, and being the tough individual that could still walk straight up steep mountains, was unaware until too late. Above all, Delmoe and Ann are godly people. A minister, he read the Scriptures in his head, memorizing all of the New Testament and much of the Old. I share this, in part because I desire prayers everywhere (prognosis, almost no survival time) for him, and Ann, herself a miracle of recovery from an "at-death?s door" illness. There have been five immediate-family cases of cancer?each one different? as well as three girl cousins, two aged 11, one age 13, as this devastating disease raged in my father?s family.
Hope you like this heart-felt portrait. (At the time, Delmoe?s beard was two-toned as painted.)
