I was asked to photograph these two traveler children at the Stow-in-the-Wold Gypsy Horse Fair in Gloucestershire. When I agreed the two kids were immediately dressed in their Sunday best, their faces washed and they were given strict instructions not to smile - hence the girl's expression! I photographed many Romanies while living in France, and it was always the same, a quick wipe with a wash-cloth, dressed in their smartest clothes and orders not to smile! So fascinating that it's the same, even in 2 different countries.
