I had the great honor of meeting the chief of one of the Zafimaniry villages in the hills of Madagascar. He was 96 years old which, with the average life expectancy there of 66, truly is old. I took this photo in his hut which, like all Zafimaniry houses*, was made entirely of wood without using any nails. He made me a coffee, which he ground with a pestle and mortar while I waited, then heated it on a fire set in the ground in the center of the room. They don't seem to have discovered chimneys there, so the smoke just billows around the room until it finally seeps through the thatched roof. We really don't appreciate how cushy our lives are! *The Zafimaniry are the only people left who still use Madagascar's original wooden architectural traditions; their craft was added to the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2003.
