No Longer in Use Contest Entry
Found this display on US Rte 3 in Whitefield, NH. Notice how the boiler is tilted. The reason for this design is because there are inclines on the Railway that exceed 10 degrees in pitch. Angling the boiler in this way keeps the burning coal in the boiler when the Fireman opens the doors to feed the fire. When this engine climbed the mountain the 3 mile round trip took 3 hours, to the summit (6,288 ft, 1,917 m). To fuel the engine for the round trip required the Fireman to shovel one ton (2000 Lbs, 907 Kg) of coal into the boiler. There's one reason why its "No Longer In Use".
