This bridge was first constructed in 1820 by Jacob Berry of N. Conway and spans the Cold River. Freshets, a combination of snow melt and excessive rain, took out the bridge in 1844, 1855 & 1869. The bridge became know as Durgin bridge for James Durgin who operated a grist mill nearby. He also drove a stagecoach route from Farmington, NH to N. Conway, NH. In his spare time he used his coach and his mill to transport and house runaway slaves on their way to Canada. This is Bridge #45 on the NH Register.
